Royal Navy Queen's South Africa Medal Battle of Jutland Officer Casualty. Awarded to G R KINNEAR BOY 1ST CL HMS BARRACOUTA bearing the two clasps CAPE COLONY and SOUTH AFRICA 1902. Boy later Gunner George Robertson Kinnear joined the Royal Navy in 1884, he came from Battersea. He passed as a Petty Officer in March 1912 and on the 11th February 1915 was promoted to the rank of Acting Gunner. It was in this rank that he was serving onboard HMS Queen Mary", when on the 31st May 1916 at the Battle of Jutland he was killed when she was hit twice by the German battlecruiser Derfflinger during the early part of the battle and her magazines exploded shortly afterwards, sinking her with the loss of more than 98 percent of the ship's complement.
