WW1 RFC Pilot Unique Memorial Plaque Shot Down by Richthofen’s Circus. Issued to commemorate IAN DERMID CAMPBELL who paid the ultimate sacrifice for his country. Accompanied by Buckingham Palace Forwarding letter. Envelope (poor) and Card Cover Second Lieutenant Ian Dermid Campbell was commissioned into the General List before being attached to the Royal Flying Corps. He was posted to France and 24 Squadron flying the DH5 Dolphin fighter aircraft. On the 30 November 1917 his Squadron was jumped by Jasta 11 the Richthofen’s Circus. He was shot down by Hans-Georg Von der Osten a friend of the Red Baron and one of his hunting pack. Osten later wrote of that day Immediately after landing, Richthofen congratulated me, but at the same time rebuked me because after my first attack I had not followed the crippled aircraft (Campbell’s DH5) into the first turn. Campbell is remembered on the Arras Flying Service Memorial.
