Royal Navy Boer War Battle of Jutland Casualty Royal Humane Society Long Service Medal Group. Awarded to Petty Officer Sydney George Reed a veteran of the Boer War, awarded the Royal Humane Society Bronze Medal for saving the life of a Royal Marine and then lost his live onboard HMS Defence when she was sunk at the Battle of Jutland.

On the 10th November, 1900, a man belonging to the Royal Marine Light Infantry fell overboard from H.M.S. Tarter at the entrance to the Bonny River, West Africa. There was a strong tide, and the locality abounds with sharks. At great risk, Reed jumped in and supported him till they were picked up by a boat.
Petty Officer Sydney George Reed joined the Royal Navy in 1881. He was awarded the Long Service Medal in 1898. In 1915 he was posted to HMS Defence a Minotaur-class armoured cruiser and was killed when Defence after being hit her magazines exploded with the loss of all lives.
