Victorian Royal Navy Officers’ Mess plate. A scarce mid 19th century example decorated with a dramatic blue and white transfer border depicting a naval battle scene. A British frigate fires, while two Jack Tars wave flags vigorously standing upon a cannon. This design is repeated three times to the border and is interspersed with a head and shoulder bust of the young Queen Victoria within a wreath of laurels and oak leaves denoting Strength and Victory. To the centre a large crown with the word “Mess” above and “4” below. This is within a chain of interlocked links. Colours remain vivid and transfer clear. Circa 1850.
