Georgian Presentation Mameluke Hilted Sword American War of Independence Interest. This fine quality sword was presented by Major General Sir Archibald Campbell who was captured at Boston 1776 and would later be the Governor of Georgia. The sword has a 32 inch curved scimitar blade with full length etched floral and classical decoration. Also with a presentation panel THE BLADE OF THIS SWORD PRESENTED BY MAJOR GENERAL SIR ARCHIBALD CAMPBELL KCB TO CAPTAIN ANGUS MAC DONALD. The blade is also engraved with R & Fab Co. This is difficult to read, but could be the cutlers details. The hilt with fire gilt cross guard and two piece grip. Complete with original bullion knot. Scabbard absent and age pitting to the blade. One gilt securing top absent. Major General Sir Archibald Campbell was born in 1739 and in 1776 he was commanding the 71st Regiment when he was captured in Boston Harbour. Mistreated by his American captives, his treatment was brought to the attention of George Washington who intervened on his behalf and until his release in 1778 received better treatment. He would be appointed Governor of Georgia, before his return to England. Later postings would include Governor of Jamaica and Madras before his death in 1791. We have been unable to find any details of Captain Angus Mac Donald.
