WW1 Welsh Regiment Cardiff Pals Military Medal, Greek Military Cross Group of Five Medals.

Awarded to Sergeant John Griffiths a native of Cardiff and original volunteer of the 11th Bn Welsh Regiment known as the Cardiff Pals Commercial Battalion. Comprising:Military Medal, “15260 SJT J. GRIFFITHS 11/ WELSH R”, 1914/15 Star, “PTE WELSH R”, British War Medal, Victory Medal, “SJT WELSH R”, Greek Military Cross. Group mounted for display. .... Accompanied by Silver War Badge “B249983”, with large certificate. .... Various original photographs and documents including official notification of the award of the Greek Military Cross.

Sergeant John Griffiths was a native of Llanarthney and enlisted at Cardiff for the 11th Bn Welsh Regiment on the 2nd September 1914, which would be known as the Cardiff Pals Commercial Battalion. After training he landed in France on the 5th September 1915. The 11th Bn were to spend a short time on the Western Front and on the 30th October 1915 sailed for Salonika and saw their first action in December in the retreat from Serbia. They would also see action at at Horseshoe Hill, Machukovo and the Battle of Doiran. Sergeant Griffiths was wounded on two occasions as can be seen from the original photograph accompanying the lot. On the 18th March 1919 he was a patient at the 2nd S.G. Hospital in Bristol and an original War Department form which accompanies the lot confirms the award of the Greek Military Cross 3rd Class, a second letter retains an original section of it’s ribbon. Sergeant Griffiths received his final discharge on the 25th June 1919 as no longer physically fit with wounds to his left elbow and right hand.
