WW1 Royal Flying Corps VC Action RFC Pilot's British War Medal. Awarded to CAPT J S DUNKERLY R.F.C. who was flying along side Alan Arnett McLeod, VC during his VC action on the 27th March 1918. Captain James Samuel Dunkerly was commissioned into the 10th Bn Scottish Rifles. He served in France with the regiment earning the 1914/15 Star. Transferring to the RFC and in November 1916 his name appeared in the London Gazette as an Observer. By 1918 he had qualified as a Pilot and was flying in France with 2 Squadron that operated the Armstrong Whitworth F.K.8 aircraft. At this time fellow Squadron pilots included Lt Montgomerie, who's diary can be found on the internet. and Alan Arnett McLeod, VC . It was on the 27th March 1918 after an engagement with the famous Richthofen flying circus that McLeod was awarded the Victoria Cross, Dunkerly flying along side, he to was wounded in the same VC action. He survived the war.
